It has been four years since Mawimbi started building itself as a staple for all things tropical in the Paris music scene by curating nights, hosting radio shows and publishing records on their own imprint. Mawimbi is a cross-cultural journey, an afro-infused electronic sound that reaches far beyond its Paris hotbed: from Berlin to Pretoria, from Tokyo to Amsterdam, the Mawimbi crew has been building a community of afro-enthusiast DJs, diggers and producers.
In order to celebrate a community that now counts over 10,000 people, Mawimbi is publishing the first installment of a new compilation series called Radio Mawimbi. Named after their bi-monthly radio show on Rinse France, this series will focus on re-edits and remixes of rare, forgotten tropical gems. “Radio Mawimbi Volume 1” contains 7 edits by some of the very best tropical diggers in the game. Trinidadian soca, haitian kompa, mandinka funk and shangaan disco are all re-edited or remixed wih respect and a deep understanding of these grooves. Beware, curious ears, you’ve got a long night of dancing ahead.
The Parisian DJ masterfully arranges hard to find and out of print relics that range from New York disco to soul, jazz, boogie and Brazilian tropicalia into a hip swaying set. Bandcamp Album of the Day Dec 21, 2016
