We now have been djing as Mawimbi Crew for about a year and a half. And trust us, we never abandoned our hopes to launch our own little record label someday! We are now here, presenting our very first release, simply entitled "Mawimbi, Vol. 0", to imply that this EP should only be viewed as a nice little taster for more upcoming releases by members of our crew as well as international artists. Stay tuned as there will be more tunes soon.
Surely a "family thing", Mawimbi stays faithful to its roots with its first release, featuring a bunch of young producers, all friends of the crew and all hailing from Paris. The EP opens with a cheerful tune by Mawimbi Crew member SSCK , referencing the great Malian orchestra tradition, famous in the late 70s.
Parisian producer Opera finds himself playing with dance music genres, beginning with a banging UK bass riddim and ending with some sort of chilled-out, killer beach-oriented synth riff.
Things get a lot heavier while PouvoirMagique offers a tribal-leaning track that features a mysterious swahili-speaking vocalist and Opprefish wanders in a remote North-African desert, sounding much like a Muslimgauze tribute with its dusted drums and trance-like chants.
The EP closes with a killer remix of Malian star Vieux Farka Touré credited as "Mawimbi" - but the pitched down vocals and detailed percussion work remind us much of Mawimbi Crew members Pouvoir Magique and w0lfchild.

"Tiefaly" contains a sample of "Tiefaly" by Super Djata Band, in "African Pearls - Mali 70, Electric Mali" (Syllart Records)
